Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter is an urban village within the city centre, full of modern culture. The last decade has seen this area become the premium place to live for urbanites, with Ludgate Hill and St Paul’s Square its established epicentre.
Knowing the area and its potential for both leisure and residential schemes, HBD had the district firmly on our radar. When a 30,000 sq ft 1960s office block, perfectly placed within the hotspot, became available, we leapt at the opportunity to take it on. We acquired the site outright, and set about creating a coveted new residential and leisure address at Ludgate Hill.
With all its new bells and whistles in the form of restaurants, cafés and boutiques, the area remains steeped in history. A short walk from the site is the Georgian St Paul’s Square, as well as clusters of listed buildings. Because of this heritage, and the site sitting within a conservation area, we knew our vision had to feed into the future of the Quarter, while honouring its past. We appointed BPN Architects, who are established Jewellery Quarter specialists with a proven track record of delivering modern, design-led schemes. They always take inspiration from the history of the area, respecting the characteristics and legacy of the surroundings. Likewise on this project, BPN have paid close attention to the story the building tells, with the exterior itself designed to align with quintessential features of Birmingham’s architecture. The use of glazed terracotta as a prominent elevation material is a knowing nod to Birmingham’s use of terracotta in the Victorian era which is still evident in many of the City’s Civic buildings. Similarly reference to the old Hinge Works, originally located in the vicinity of our site, can be found in the hinged detailing of the glazed terracotta and also in the brick detailing of the elevation.
Together, we are bringing our progressive plans for the site to life.
Cornwall House will become a premium residence, offering 95 generously sized apartments to the Quarter, bolstered by on-site amenities such as a gym, residents’ lounge and roof terrace. The ground floor will also accommodate 5100 sq ft of commercial space, enhancing the existing leisure offer along Ludgate Hill and situated around St Paul’s Square. The scheme lines not only Ludgate Hill, but also overlooks the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal. With this in mind, we’re creating a three-story building of specially designed homes to face the waterway and add to its picturesque scenes. This building will incorporate hanging tiles to elevate its facade, integrating it further with the canal-side setting.
When complete, Cornwall house promises to stand shoulder to shoulder with the other distinctive buildings of the Jewellery Quarter, while boasting high-quality, city-centre living and leisure, commercial opportunities for the city’s finest artisans and independents.
