Atkins are one of the world’s most respected design, engineering and project management consultancies within the nuclear industry, with over 60 year’s of experience. In 2014, they were already based at the West Lakes Science Park, but had their sights set on a bigger and better operation within the centre.
Atkins had a number of smaller, fragmented offices in the area, but were keen to expand and become one hub. They’d identified a suitable site, now all they needed was the right organisation to develop the scheme to the standard expected of the science park – enter HBD. Our previous experience in Cumbria meant we knew regional grant funding was available. We included this advantage in our bid, which ultimately bolstered the financial viability of the scheme, and won us the project.
This was our first foray into the nuclear sector, but with extensive research of policy and guidelines, we were soon up to speed and able to meet Atkins’ unique needs. For example, with the nature of their business, security became a key consideration for the building.
Completed in 2015, Atkins new home, Rutherford House, boasts 21500 sq ft of grade A office accommodation, and has allowed them to expand into a 150-person employer. The project gave us vital insight into the requirements of the nuclear supply chain, and we’re now actively involved in significant new projects within Cumbria’s nuclear industry.
